Obituary: Gail M. Mulrain

Gail M. Mulrain, 74
Gail M. Mulrain, of Hull, died peacefully on Sept. 27 in South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She was 74.
Gail was born in Waltham on July 20, 1945. She worked for Polaroid Corp. for more than 30 years and later worked as a part-time technician at Newton-Wellesley Hospital until retirement.  
She loved being by the ocean and enjoyed walking on the beach and collecting shells. She also enjoyed skiing and reading, and she was a student pilot. 
She is survived by her brother, Thomas Mulrain, of Burlington; and her nieces and nephews, Christine Dubois, Kenny Dubois, Janet Wright, Debbie Mulrain, and Christopher Mulrain. Gail was especially close to her aunts, Penny Mulrain, of Florida, and the late Pat Baker, Geraldine Abramo, and Corinne Jome. She is also survived by her longtime loving friend, Lee Tanguay, of Wrentham, and many cousins and friends. She was the sister of the late Joyce Dubois.
There will be a service in celebration of her life at a later date.

Obituary: Howard Ralph Moog Jr.

Howard Ralph Moog Jr., 68
Howard Ralph Moog Jr. died Sept. 19 after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 68. 
He was the father of Diane Moog, of Lynn, and Michael Moog, of Hull; loving grandfather of Stephanie and Kayla Papasodero, Ashley Lovas, Shawn Moog, and Michael Jagger; and beloved great-grandfather of Joshua. 
Mr. Moog is also survived by his sister, Susan Shumaker, of Hingham, and his brother, William Moog, of Hull; another brother, Robert Moog, predeceased him. 
He was a Hull EMT and firefighter who was injured in the Blizzard of 1978, while saving the life of another, and had to retire. He also coached Hull baseball for many years. 
Also known as “Grampy,” he was a very special man who truly loved his family, and so many looked up to him as a mentor and friend. His family says, “We will always love you, and it’s never good-bye.”
A memorial wake for Mr. Moog will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 2-4:30 p.m., at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Relatives and friends are invited.

Obituary: Ellis Slater Gilbert

Ellis Slater Gilbert, 24
Ellis Slater Gilbert, a lifelong resident of Hull, took his own life on Sept. 24. He was 24.
Ellis attended the South Shore Charter School and graduated in 2013. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in building construction technology in 2018 and went on to earn his master’s degree in building construction technology this year.  
Eager to start his career, he worked as a junior engineer with Rivermoor Engineering in Scituate.
Ellis was quick-witted and had a passion for humor that he shared with others; he took great joy in making all who knew him laugh. He loved learning and spent a great deal of his time researching a wide range of subjects. He was an extremely creative thinker and was very artistic. 
Ellis was also a talented visual artist, musician, and engineer, quite the tinkerer, and an aspiring recreational fisher. He was driven to take on challenging problems and found great satisfaction in successfully solving them.
He was the dearly beloved son of John and Robin (Rosiak) Gilbert, of Hull, and a cherished grandson of Pat Mills and Fred Rosiak, of New Jersey, and the late Jack and Nancyann Gilbert, of Scituate. He is also survived by scores of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.
Ellis’ funeral services will be private. He will be interred in Hull Village Cemetery.

Perla Elaine Olsen (Horne) of Hull, died September 17, 2019.  
Perla retired as the director of the Hull Housing Authority. She adored her family and loved spending time with them. She would always put others before herself and help anyone in need. Perla will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Beloved wife of John W. Olsen of Hull. Maria Dowling Webb, of Hull, formerly of Arnold, Md., died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sept. 10. She was 66. 
The loving daughter of the late William F. Dowling Jr. and Elizabeth von Wellsheim Dowling, she was the devoted mother of Matthew Webb, of Milton, the late Michael Timothy Webb, and Amanda Hund, of California. She was the cherished grandmother of Dominic, Noah, and Franklin. 
She was the dear sister of William F. Dowling III, of Cranberry Isles, Maine; Patrick Dowling, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Anne Grulich, of Aztec, N.M.; Margaret Wells, of Tampa, Fla.; and the late Elizabeth Ness and Gretchen and Timothy Dowling. 
Maria retired after 30 years as a paralegal case manager with the law firm of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman in Washington, D.C. In her retirement she enjoyed teaching and caring for the elderly as well as caring for her grandsons, spending time with her new Hull friends, and walking Nantasket Beach. 
A funeral service will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Ave., Milton, on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 11:30 a.m.

Malcolm A. Johnson
Malcolm A. (“Mal”) Johnson, of Hull, died on Sept. 8. He was a hardworking man who loved to build and fix things. He was always there to help family and friends with a project. 
Mal proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and worked at the Langham Hotel in Boston as head of the engineering department for 27 years. 
He was a joker with a great sense of humor, especially with his famous line: “Don’t worry, we’re calling the ‘toe’ truck.” He was a caring, loving, and generous man who would put everyone else before himself. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Mal adored his family, especially being “Papa” to 22 grandchildren. Son of the late Andrew and Mary Johnson, he was the beloved husband of Jean Johnson and cherished father of Cindy Whelan and her husband, Ed, of Hull; David Johnson and his wife, Kristin, of Lee; Peter Bossey and his wife, Danielle, of Scituate; Kimberly Beaudette and her husband, Steven, of Nashua, N.H.; James Johnson and his wife, Jennifer, of Pelham, N.H.; Mark Bossey and his wife, Holly, of Marshfield; and Lisa Hennessey and her husband, Marc, of Hull. He was the loving brother of Marilyn Morin and her late husband, Fred, of Newport Richey, Fla.; Sharon Harvey and her late husband, Frank, of Martinez, Ga.; Nancy Knight and her husband, George, of Wolfeboro, N.H.; Charles Johnson and his wife, Lee, of Billerica; and the late Lawrence Johnson and his surviving wife, Joyce, of Windsor Locks, Conn., and the late Andrea, Sandra, and Alan Johnson. He is also survived by 22 of his favorite grandchildren and by many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Donald Alexander McNeil

Donald Alexander McNeil, 83
Donald Alexander (“Sandy”) McNeil, born May 4, 1936, died on Aug. 29.
Sandy was well-known in Hull, where he spent most of his youth. He attended Hull schools and worked for several businesses in town, such as removing nails from old boards and straightening them for Aldon Bryanton for 25 cents a coffee can full. 
Sandy delivered the Patriot Ledger, set pins manually at the bowling alley, caddied at the Cohasset Golf Club, worked at camps, restaurants and Paragon Park, Joe Silva’s garage, and A St. market, to name a few. He was awarded a medal of honor for saving a drowning downed pilot in the Hull bay. 
After high school, he attended Boston University and then married his wife, Carolyn, with whom he raised three children: Adora, Deborah, and Daniel. Daniel predeceased him. 
Sandy lived a life of purpose. He served his country in the Air Force for four years and the Navy for seven years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, boating, cars, motorcycles, and creating art. 
He retired to Florida, where he met his “girl” Shirley, with whom he spent the past 15 years.
He is survived by his daughters, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his brother, Roderick, of Texas. 
There will be a private military service in Florida. At Sandy’s request, in lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the Shriners, St Jude’s Hospital for Children, or Disabled American Veterans. 

Obituary: Anna M. DeCoste

Anna M. DeCoste, 49
Anna M. DeCoste, of Hull, passed away Saturday after a brief illness, with her loving son and husband at her bedside. She was 49.
Anna was born in Dorchester as the youngest of six. She met her husband in May 1993. In 1995 Kevin was born; Anna loved taking Kev to auditions and movie sets for his acting as a child and became his agent looking out for him. She also loved taking care of Sean, Tyler, and Ryan who, although not her children, were treated like one of Anna’s own. 
She loved animals, and at any given time she could have multiple dogs and cats living at her house. She especially loved her Jack and was looking forward to Mhysa having puppies. 
In 2000, while visiting friends, Anna fell in love with Hull, and in 2001 she and Bob bought their house, which she turned into a beautiful loving home from a small cottage. She loved the ocean and enjoyed going tubing on her boat and watching her little guy Brayden. She lived her life with gusto and loved using her hoverboard around town. She was always there to help someone out, especially if they were a child in need of a loving adult or a place to stay. She also loved hosting her annual Super Bowl parties and was an ardent fan of the Pats and Sox. 
She is survived by her adoring husband, Bob, her cherished son, Kevin, and many surrogate sons and daughters as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Patricia O. (O’Connor) Ruddy, a longtime resident of Hingham and Hull, died Aug. 22.
She was the cherished mother of  Kathleen LeBlanc and her husband, Paul, of Hingham; Charles Ruddy, of Scituate; Patricia Ruddy, of Vermont; Lauralee  Tedeschi and her husband, Mark, of Hingham; Jennifer Verrochi, of Hull; and James Harrington, of Abington. 
She was the daughter of the late I. Jerome O’Connor and Dorothy (Fitzpatrick) O’Connor and the sister of  Pauline Smith, of New Hampshire, Edna  O’Connor, of California, Kevin Fitzpatrick, of Weymouth, and the late Margaret “Peggy” Petrofsky and Jerome O’Connor. Patricia is also survived by 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren along with loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Vera C. Dalton
Vera C. (McGinn) Dalton, of Hull, died on August 22. 
She was born and raised in Boston, the daughter of the late James and Euphemia (Campbell) McGinn. She later moved to Hull to her “home by the bay” where she would reside for 52 years. She worked for many years as a lunch lady for the Hull Public Schools. 
Vera loved to read, do her crossword puzzles, and listen to her favorite talk shows and music on her transistor radio. Her perfect days were spent on the porch, surrounded by her family and friends.
Beloved wife of the late Robert J. Dalton, Vera was the loving mother of Francis J. Dalton, of Florida; Michelle M. Hickson, of Florida; Robert N. Dalton, of Florida; Denise M. Clark, of Hull; Margaret M. O’Keefe and Raymond, of New York; and Kelley A. Condon and Brian, of Quincy. She was treasured Grandma to Stephen Dalton, Katherine Hickson Verteramo, Matthew Waldron, Andrew Hickson, Daniel Clark, Thomas Clark, Kelley O’Keefe Zabriskie, Emily Waldron, Megan Condon, Stephen Condon, Samantha Dalton, Alexandra Dalton, and Danielle Dalton and treasured “G.G.” to nine great-grandchildren. 
Dear mother-in-law of Pamela Roop and Sharon Dalton, Vera is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins and her dear friend and loving caregiver, Jane Conathan. 
Vera was predeceased by her children William J. Dalton, Maryellen Dalton, Maureen A. Waldron, Stephen G. Dalton, and Daniel Dalton and also by her siblings James McGinn, Agnes Doiron, Rita McGrath, and William McGinn.

Robert I. Davis, of Hull, who formerly resided in Quincy, Boston, and Burlington, died in an automobile accident on Aug. 1. He was 67.  
Bobby worked as a tradesman. He loved animals and was dedicated to his friends. He would do anything for them.

Nancy Dennen, of Hull, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Aug. 23. She was 52.
Nancy adored her family and her dog, Jack. She enjoyed going to the beach, taking Jack for walks, listening to upbeat music, and dancing. She also loved babysitting her grandson, John, and spending time with her family. 
Nancy was a feisty, determined, strong, and loving woman, who protected those she cared about. She would do anything for anyone. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. 
Daughter of the late Lawrence and Mary Dennen, she was the loving mother of Jason Dennen, of Cambridge; Justine Dixon, of Hull; Ryan Dixon, of Randolph; Brandon Dixon, of Onset; and Hannah Dixon of Milford. She was the cherished sister of Debbie Cooney, of Franklin; Lawrence Dennen Jr., of Plymouth; and Colleen Shannon, of Plymouth. She was the devoted grandmother of John Thomas Dixon, of Hull. 
Nancy was the former partner of the late John Dixon and niece of Warren and the late Pauline Goller. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her beloved dog, Jack.

Philip W. Hunt Jr., of Hull, died on Aug. 26 after a courageous battle with cancer. 
He was the loving father of Philip W. Hunt III, of Foxborough; Julie Rohlfing, of Weymouth; and the late Daniel Hunt; and the cherished Grandpa of Philip IV, Melanie, Hailey, and Brooke. 
Philip was the loving son of Margaret “Peggy” (Medico) Hunt and the late Philip W. Hunt Sr. and the devoted brother of Sandra, Diane, Donna, Joanne, and Paul. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Virginia Bernard

Virginia Bernard, 79
Virginia Bernard died on March 14 in Largo, Fla. She was 79.
Virginia was born in Middleport, N.Y., and graduated from Roy-Hart High School. She moved to Boston in 1959 and then in 1970 to Hull, where she raised her four sons. 
She went to First Baptist Church in Hingham and St. Nicolas United Methodist Church in Hull. She worked at The Bargain Center in Quincy and volunteered at Wellspring Thrift Shop in Hull. She loved the beach, and she loved working outside in the yard. She was a square dancer with the Gingham Swingers in the 1970s.
In 1995, Virginia moved to Florida, where she was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the Interfaith Food Pantry and president of the Suncoast Parkinsonians chapter of APDA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William Bernard, and is survived by her sons: William Bernard, Thomas Bernard, James Bernard (Bridgette), and Joseph Bernard. She is also survived by two sisters, Betty Hill and Janice Chapman. Other survivors are two grandsons: Audie and Frankie.
A memorial service was held at her church in Florida. A graveside service will be held at Hull Village Cemetery.

Obituary: Daniel Joseph Sheehan Jr.

Daniel Joseph Sheehan Jr., 78
Daniel Joseph Sheehan Jr., of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Hull, died at home on Aug. 11. 
Born May 8, 1941, in Boston, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, was an IBEW Local 103 electrician, managed Quincy Bay Flounder Fleet, and was a charter boat captain. He also had a passion for building model boats. 
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Dianna Wood, and five children: Jeanne Knudsen (Paul); Daniel J. Sheehan IV (Kelly); Mary Sheridan (Philip); Cynthia Knudsen (Steven); and Susan Rosner (Jeff); 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. 
Preceding him in death were his parents: Daniel J. Sheehan Sr. and Olive Kimball; his stepmother, Agnes Sheehan; and his sister, Mary Springer. Services were held at Palm Beach National Chapel, Lake Worth¸ Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Mr. Sheehan’s name.

Obituary: Geraldine Wieners

Geraldine Wieners, at 74
Geraldine (Guinessy) Wieners, also known as Jerri, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Hull, died in Fort Myers on July 28, surrounded by her loving family. She was 74.
Born in Brookline, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Fitzgerald) Guinessy. She graduated from the Jeanne d’Arc Academy in Milton with the class of 1962. 
Jerri’s career was in retail and real estate. She loved her work and the relationships she built throughout the years. In her spare time, she enjoyed line dancing, going to the beach, taking “Discovery Learning” car rides in her cobalt blue Jeep Wrangler with her husband, Paul, and her “Nana Days” with each of her grandchildren. 
Family was the most important part of Jerri’s life. She loved the time she was able to spend with her children and grandchildren. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for the people she loved. 
Jerri was a proud Irish woman and loved everything about her heritage and culture. In 2012, her husband surprised her with a trip to Ireland, and it was a dream come true for Jerri. 
Jerri was a positive, happy, sweet, caring, loving, and selfless woman. Her life lessons, love, and example are her legacy, which continues through her children and grandchildren. She will be missed by all the lives she touched. 
Jerri and Paul Wieners married on March 12, 1982, in Hingham, and together they shared 37 loving years of marriage. She was the devoted mother of Brenda McIntosh; Carol Congelos, of Cape Coral, Fla.; and Dianne Pyburn and her husband, Tyler, of Norfolk. She was the loving grandmother of Nikolas, Brandon, and Julia McIntosh, Jay Gibbons, Chase Congelos, and Jake and Cole Pyburn. She was the soon-to-be grandmother of twins and the loving great-grandmother of Dimitri McIntosh. She was the dear sister of Mary G. Christie and Patricia Foley and her husband, John. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. 
Local services have been held. Interment is private. A memorial service will be held in Fort Myers at a later date.

Obituary: John E. Conwell

John E. Conwell, 75
John E. (“Denny”) Conwell, of Boston and Hull, died on July 27 at age 75. 
A graduate of Georgetown University and Suffolk Law School, he served in the U.S. Army, the Registry of Motor Vehicles, the Massachusetts State Police, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and the law firm of Bulger & Finnerty. For 20 years, he maintained a solo legal practice. 
Denny was an early supporter of the civil rights movement and a firm believer in the Fourth and Sixth Amendments. His business card read: “Tired of pleading guilty?” 
He was always ready for trial in his law practice, which included more than 20 murder trials, and he was willing to represent all comers. His proudest legal accomplishment was a challenge to the Boston Police Department policy of “search on sight” (Commonwealth v. Lamar Phillips, Supreme Judicial Court, 1992).
Denny loved playground basketball (his street name was “Doc”), criminal law, Pall Mall unfiltered, and Barbara. A head injury forced his early retirement, and in recent years he struggled with health issues. He did not go gentle into that good night. 
He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 51 years, and heartbroken pets, Watson and the Skunk.

Obituary: Michael Roger Landolfi

Michael Roger Landolfi, 83
Michael Roger Landolfi, of Weymouth and formerly of Hanover, died suddenly on July 28. He was 83.
Born in Boston on Oct. 4, 1937, he was the son of the late Dewey and Lucy (Falcione) Landolfi. He graduated from Boston College and earned his master’s degree at Boston State College. After graduation, he pursued his passion to teach our younger generation and went on to teach in Hull for 33 years, retiring as principal of Hull Memorial Middle School. 
He devoted his personal time to his family, coaching and mentoring, and his children and their friends as they grew into adulthood, instilling the values of kindness, friendship, and commitment to helping others.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Judy A. (Baker) Landolfi. He was the loving and proud father of Michael Landolfi and his wife, Paula, of Pembroke; Mark Landolfi and his wife, Lisa, of Hanover; Christopher Landolfi and his wife, Barbara, of Hanover; Matthew Landolfi and his wife, Stephanie, of Duxbury; and Brian Landolfi and his wife, Nicole, of Hanover. He was an amazing grandfather and was affectionately referred to as “Pa” by his 11 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his siblings Jean DeGroat, Lucille Lonergan, Anthony Diomede, and the late Gloria Pertot. 
Visiting hours were held at the Sullivan Funeral Home in Hanover on Aug. 1. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church in Hanover on Aug. 2, followed by burial in Hanover Center Cemetery.

Obituary: Helen Wolfe

Helen Wolfe, 98
Helen (Toutloff) Wolfe, 98, a resident of Hull and Pembroke, died in the home of her daughter, Linda, and her husband, Bob Widdop, on July 24. She was 98.
She is survived by two other daughters: Carol, and her husband, Kevin Robicheau, of Tennessee; and Eileen, and her husband, Michael Trubia, of Connecticut. She also leaves eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The daughter of the late Elmer and Caroline Toutloff, Helen enjoyed her many years in Hull, with a view of the worlds end, and the last 10 years in Pembroke, with a view of an abundance of flowers. She was an avid reader and bowler (Webster Shore Lanes in Hull) and loved playing cards and the Boston Red Sox.

Bradford E. Pope, 86

Bradford E. Pope, 86, died July 29 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 27, 1933, in Weymouth, the son of Dwight and Mabel (Snell) Pope. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Dwight, and sister, Marcia.
Brad graduated from Hingham High School, class of 1953. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the former Hull VFW and chairman of its blood bank for many years. A retired Hull firefighter, he was a member of the Hull Firefighters Association and a member of the I.U.O.E. Local 4.
Brad is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lucy (DeMings) Pope; his two daughters, Victoria Pope Matton and her husband, Larry, of Hingham, and Corinna Nixon and her husband, Peter, of Hull; and four grandchildren: Kellie Nixon and her boyfriend, John, of Florida, Kristopher Nixon and his girlfriend, Kristen, of Pembroke, Brad Matton and his wife, Mary, of Quincy, and Ashley Sampson and her husband, Dan, of Hanson. He also leaves the light of his life for this past year, his great-granddaughter, Harper Victoria Sampson. 
Brad will also be fondly remembered by his brother-in-law and close friend, Burnet Pearce, and his wife, Nancy, of Maryland, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Brad’s name to the Hospice of the South Shore, 30 Reservoir Park Drive, Rockland, MA 02370.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, Aug. 2, from 4-8 p.m. at Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow at the Hull Village Cemetery.
