Obituary: Richard J. Cleverly

Richard J. Cleverly, at 45

Richard John Cleverly, affectionately known as Rick, passed away on February 1, 2026, at the age of 45. Born on June 28, 1980, in Quincy, Rick spent his formative years in Hingham, where he was surrounded by the love and companionship of close family and friends.

Rick’s childhood was a vibrant tapestry woven with outdoor adventures and boundless energy. He found joy exploring the wild landscapes of Baker Hill, Bare Cove Park – also known as the Hingham Ammunition Depot – and Wompatuck State Park. These natural playgrounds became the backdrop for countless memories made on dirt bikes and skateboards. His deep connection to nature and sense of freedom were evident from an early age and remained central throughout his life.

A man of many passions, Rick had a profound love for fishing and music. His guitar was more than an instrument – it was a source of joy that he played with his family and friends. Rick’s music created moments of camaraderie and fun. He also cherished spontaneous rides to anywhere the road would take him – especially to beaches where he could walk along the shoreline, skip rocks across the water, and listen to the rhythmic ebb and flow of the tides.

Rick will be remembered for his kind heart, loving spirit, and compassionate nature. Those who knew him were touched by his gentle demeanor and adventurous soul.

He is survived by his daughter, Heidi Cleverly; his parents, Barbara Roth and Richard Cleverly; his sister, Dawn Cleverly; his brother, Erik Cleverly; his many aunts and uncles, Elaine (Cleverly) D’Angelo and Robert D’Angelo, Albert Cleverly and Carolyn (Love) Cleverly, Richard Roth and Tonda (Wentworth) Roth and Jeanette Roth; as well as many cousins.

Rick was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Cathleen (Doran) Roth and Richard Roth, and paternal grandparents, Barbara (Nightingale) Cleverly and John Cleverly. He also was predeceased by his lifelong best friend, Nicholas (Nick) Webster of Hingham.

Memorial services will be held privately.

May Rick’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and may his spirit continue to echo in every shoreline breeze and with every guitar chord played.

Friends, family and acquaintances are invited to share their first time meeting Rick, memories, stories and photos.
