Obituary: William F. Marcella

William F. Marcella, at 93

William Francis Marcella, of Middleboro, 93, died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 8.
Born in Somerville, Mr. Marcella graduated from The College of the Holy Cross and Boston University School of Law, where a plaque is hung in his honor for being the first winner of the moot court competition in 1944. Upon graduation, he started working in his father’s law firm in Boston, and then as an assistant attorney general for the state. He once won a case that he argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. He eventually opened up his own law practice, in Hanover.
Mr. Marcella was an avid tennis player, music lover, talented dancer, and accomplished artist. He was married for 58 years to the late Virginia [Herlihy] Marcella, living and raising their six children in Hull, Hanover, and Cape Cod before retiring to Vero Beach, Florida in 1989.
Mr. Marcella was predeceased by his brother Felix “Sonny” in 1974; his wife, Virginia, in 2006; his son, Bruce, in 1992; and his granddaughter, Ivy, in 2005. He leaves his sons and their wives: William Marcella Jr. [Gayle] of Harwich, Gregory Marcella [Christine] of Oak Bluffs, Kurt Marcella [Pam] of Scituate, Douglas Marcella [Kym], of Carver; his daughter, Kim Marcella, of Yarmouthport; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. For the last eight years, Jacqueline Trifari, of New Jersey, has been a close and loving companion. In addition, he leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
