Obituary: Richard F. Desharnais

Richard F. Desharnais, at 66

Richard F. Desharnais, a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, died peacefully Monday. Born in Boston, he died in Scituate at the age of 66.

Mr. Desharnais was the beloved son of the late Robert and Nancy Desharnais. He grew up in a large, loving family alongside his siblings: Robert J. Desharnais, Jr. (Loretta), of Ohio; Laureen M. Reilly (Steven), of Quincy; Ronald M. Desharnais (Vickie), of New Hampshire; Raymond G. Desharnais, of Weymouth; Anne M. Wright (Doug), of South Carolina; Frances D. Desharnais (Tara Hennessey), of Randolph; and Vincent A. Desharnais, of Quincy.

His siblings Robert, Laureen, and Raymond predeceased him.

Known affectionately by many as “Superman,” he will be dearly missed by his extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A proud graduate of Braintree High School, Mr. Desharnais spent 37 meaningful years as a dedicated member of Road to Responsibility, where he found purpose, connection, and community. His involvement reflected his unwavering determination and uplifting spirit.

His love of music — especially Elvis — was known to all who met him. His singing brought joy not only to himself but also to those lucky enough to hear him. He was also a proud participant in the Special Olympics, where his enthusiasm, athleticism, and team spirit were truly inspiring.

He had a lifelong love of movies and television, with favorites like Jaws, Star Trek, Speed Racer, Batman, and, of course, Happy Days. He adored the Fonz and often answered to “Clark Kent” or “Superman.”

An avid swimmer, Mr. Desharnais especially loved the beach and the simple joy of being in the water. He held a deep fondness for the town of Hull, where he grew up and spent countless happy days at Paragon Park.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Friday, Aug. 1 from 10-11 a.m. at the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 809 Main St., South Weymouth. A funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Jerome’s Church, Weymouth. Burial will take place at Fairmount Cemetery, Weymouth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Road to Responsibility, Inc., 1831 Ocean St., Marshfield, MA 02050-4904.
