Obituary: Raymond Russell Chase

Raymond Russell Chase, at 88

Raymond Russell Chase, known as “Moose,” a lifelong resident of Hull, passed away on August 31, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 88 years old.

Born on February 22, 1937, Mr. Chase grew up in Hull and never strayed far from the town he loved. He graduated from Archbishop Williams High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business from Boston College. His knowledge and love for business began right after graduation, when he worked at Friendly’s. He then brought this passion locally, managing Jake’s Seafood for his family, which then led to his greatest business venture of all, Schooner’s Restaurant.

Mr. Chase and his beloved wife, Jacqui, opened Schooner’s in 1990. It quickly became more than a restaurant; it was a well-loved Hull establishment. Known by all and loved by many, Schooner’s was a place where generations gathered, memories were made, and Moose’s steady presence could always be felt.

Outside of the restaurant, Mr. Chase enjoyed life’s simple pleasures – trips to the casino, cheering on the Boston Red Sox, a good lobster dinner (where no meat ever went to waste), and relaxing with a game of solitaire or cribbage. He loved cruising around town in his Cadillac or sitting peacefully on his front porch, the very same porch he sat on as a boy and then watched his daughters and grandkids grow up on.

Though a quiet gentleman by nature, Mr. Chase had a gift for storytelling and a great sense of humor. He was especially proud of his two daughters, Katelyn and Jacqulyn, and found his greatest joy in watching his family grow and becoming a grandfather. Mr. Chase also played a special role in the lives of his nieces and nephews, always showing up, always dependable, and always someone to look up to.

He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, loyalty, and strength, and a community that was better for having known him.

Mr. Chase will be remembered as a proud, hardworking, and honest man. His legacy lives on in the warmth of Schooner’s, in the stories shared across tables there, and in the hearts of all who knew him.

Beloved husband of Jacqueline (Rust) Chase; cherished father of Katelyn Chase and her wife, Kelley Chase, and Jacqulyn Greenleaf and her husband, John Thomas Greenleaf. Proud “Grumpa” of Quinn, Sonny, Maddox, Delia, and Bennett, who will dearly miss the ways he used to sneak cookies to them. He was predeceased by his brothers Joe, John, Leo, and Bob. Mr. Chase also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Thursday, September 4, from 3-7 p.m. in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 40 Sea St., North Weymouth.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Friday, September 5, prior to the funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church at 10 a.m. Burial in Hull Village Cemetery.
