Obituary: Eleanor June Atherton
/Eleanor June Atherton, at 93
Eleanor June (Lawrence) Atherton of Hingham, formerly of Hull, died on Friday, October 9, 2026.
Daughter of Lillian Elizabeth (Hoetger) Lawrence and Raymond Walter Lawrence, Eleanor was born on June 12, 1933, in Kingston, New York, and most recently lived in the Linden Ponds Retirement Community of Hingham.
She was a 1951 graduate of Kingston High School and a 1954 graduate of the Union University School of Nursing in Albany. Eleanor married Roger Morse Atherton, Jr. at Harvard University Chapel on March 28, 1959, after a six-month engagement, in the style of the time.
Survived by her husband of more than 68 years; sons Steven Dean of Worcester and Brian Scott of Edmond, Oklahoma; daughter Gail Ann of New York City; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her brother Donald Raymond predeceases her.
She was a kind soul whose senior yearbook memo was “A light heart lives long.” Eleanor enjoyed an engaging and fulfilling life from beginning to end. Starting in Boston and living in Dover, New Hampshire; Acton, Massachusetts; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Norman, Oklahoma; and Hingham in succession as her husband progressed through his career in corporate management, then university administration, and lastly in Hull after his retirement. She was a wonderful cook, treasured companion, social dilettante, and accomplished quilter.
Her favorite activity in retirement was designing and producing beautiful and creative quilts, usually taking over six months to complete; each one a work-of-art in the truest sense, while her husband built model sailing ships. They enjoyed a vibrant social life in Hull for more than 20 years, participating in local social, civic, and political activities and offering their home on the shore as a haven for their favorite friends, of which there were many.
She had recently served a tenure as president of the Cross Town Quilters Association of the South Shore, a social group she treasured for many years.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visitation on Friday, October 16, from 12-1 p.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald Street, Hingham, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 1 p.m. in the funeral home.
